Working with children and adolescents with ADHD can be extremely challenging. The lack of focus and motivation, constant interruptions, social conflicts, poor engagement and potential co-existing language and learning disorders can be exhausting. I used to struggle to work effectively with children with ADHD. I would often spend all of my time managing “behaviours” rather than teaching. However, after over twenty years of clinical and classroom experience as a paediatric speech pathologist and twelve years of the daily experience of having children with ADHD, working with children and adolescents with ADHD and their “team” are the most rewarding experiences in my career.
